You are never alone in CrossFit

About six months ago, I was introduced to the wonderful, intense world of CrossFit. A friend of mine thought that I was a “CrossFitter” and she told me that I should participate in the South America´s Regional Qualifier last May.

There is not a day that goes by that I am not talking about CrossFit; either what the WOD is going to be, or trying to explain to someone what it is

At that time, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into (because my friend thought wrong, I was NOT a CrossFitter) but I said “sure, why not?” So, I participated in the first WOD of the Regionals nd that was my first real taste of CrossFit. I am very glad that I did and now to this day I am proud to be known to many people as “CrossFit Mary”.

There is not a day that goes by that I am not talking about CrossFit; either what the WOD is going to be for that day, or trying to explain to someone what it is, and I have the CrossFitPeru website open almost all day! I am sure almost everyone in CrossFit can relate to this and that is why I love being part of this community.

I do not have children… yet. I have noticed that at most social gatherings here, the men seem to gather on one side of the room and the women on the other. So what does the topic tend to be about on the woman side? “Oh my son did this, and my daughter can do that” and “my kids to go this nido while hers go to that school.” Then the conversation switches a little and someone will ask me “So Mary, tell me more about CrossFit.”

In Crossfit, you always meet others that are ready and willing to give it their all each day!

What I love the most about CrossFit is that it sells itself!! I am a person that is internally motivated to exercise and be active and I honestly love it. Some people think that I’m crazy , but I enjoy working really hard; I enjoy sweating like crazy, and I love the challenges I have to face. But, I know the majority of people are not like that.

For most people, it is hard to have the discipline to get up every day and want to go to the gym, run, or whatever. I have a degree in Health Promotion and Exercise Science and one of the hardest things to do is motivate people to exercise and eat healthy unless you really want it. In these past 6 months, without having to really encourage anyone to do CrossFit, but by just setting the example and friends of mine that see pictures, start asking me “Mary, that looks really awesome, can I go try it out with you?” CrossFit is never boring, you can count on that! And maybe that is why it is so enticing to people.

In Crossfit, you are never “alone”. You always meet others that are ready and willing to give it their all each day! No one shows up to class and tries to talk on their cell phone while working out. In CrossFit, there is no time or room for slackers. That is what I love about it, it is so intense and hardcore and you get to meet other people who are also there to enjoy and suffer with you every WOD.

  8. Hey Mary: Well done, I enjoyed your article. I’m always impressed by what you’re doing at Crossfit. You jump up and down on boxes and do endless repetitions of weights better than any person I know. You write that some people think you’re craft. I am happy to agree, some people do think you’re crazy. And by some I mean a lot. Well all of them, actually.
